Riding and Road Safety Checklist
As leisure riders, we often need to ride on the roads. Be it for fitness work or simply to get to the nearest bridle path, it's rare that a rider doesn't encounter some road work in their equine routines. Use our checklist to make sure you have the knowledge and equipment to stay as safe as possible.
- Make sure you're up to speed with the Highway Code guidelines
- Know the correct signals to let other road users know your intentions
- Let someone know where you’re going and how long you might be
- Remember to always be courteous to other road users – a thank you goes a long way
- Check your tack for wear and tear, a split rein or broken stirrup leather could cause trouble away from home
- Accessorise you and your horse with hi-vis, extra seconds can save lives
- Make sure your horse’s shoes are secure
- Pack your phone in a safe place
- Make sure you have your personal details and an emergency contact with you in case something happens
- Share advice for road users on your social media pages
- Make sure your horse insurance covers you for riding on the roads, and you have a minimum of Third Party Liability cover
